Shadow

Yesterday I was being pulled through the neighborhood by Radar and Jake. We stopped by to see their favorite friend, Topper (a Spaniel dog). We continued along looking for cats and squirrels. We saw my neighbor Jill. She looked up the street and across the busy street and saw a dog walking alone. I headed off with my rescue team. I whistled, the dog stopped and looked our way. I was afraid that he might try to cross the street, but he stood still and watched the cars going by. We made it to the top of our street and started to cross. I yelled at the dog to stay, luckily he did.

Once we crossed the street the dog was a little leery of Jake and Radar. He was a large dog about the size of a German Shepherd. He had a beautiful black and white coat and fluffy curled tail. He looked sort of like a large Border Collie. Radar was infatuated. The dog was friendly, so we took him by his tagless collar and gracelessly made it back to our fenced in backyard.

I made a sign and put it on the corner. By the time the boys came home from school we hadn't had any calls. David and Andrew were happy about this because this dog was like a big teddy bear. He was on his back getting lots of tummy rubs. Radar was so happy to have this giant dog romping through the yard with him.

David and I decided to take the dog for a walk and let him lead us. The dog sniffed the ground like he was tracking something. We asked some people in a van if they knew the dog. They said no. He led us to a neighborhood and to a fenced in backyard. The gate was closed and it looked like nobody was home. The people nextdoor were outside, so we asked if they knew this dog. They said no. We asked several other people. No luck.

We kept walking until finally we saw a lady in a SUV slowing down and pointing and mouthing that that was her dog. We waited for her to pull up in a driveway. The lady said she had workers at her house that had left the door open. We asked what his name was. She said "Shadow".

I thought he looked more like a "Captain".

That's great that you got him back to his home. I have found a couple of loose dogs while on walks and will use Clio's leash to take them home. Clio doesn't really need a leash anyway.

Out of three dogs that actually let me put them on the leash I was not able to find the owner and found a new home for one(Penny/Little Katie/Lucy). The owners came and got theirs after I left a sign on my front door for the second. And the third one got away because my side gate wasn't closed.

A couple of other had ID tags and I just took them to their homes.

Having a nice extra dog for a day is fun for the whole family.

When I have grandkids, I want them to call me "Captain." If people ask, why do they call me Captain, they will say, "because he knows how to sail boats."

I'm going to name all of my dogs "Captain" from now on. If people ask, why do you call your dogs Captain, I will say, "to irritate my brother."
