It’s even more funny to me because I first played “letter” in high school in Alan Cronce’s basement on a terminal that used *paper* (not CRT) output. He hacked into the Georgia Tech network to play it. Alan and Charlie stole the terminal from BellSouth which was sponsoring our Boy Scout Explorer’s group…. but that’s another story…

I remember you playing that and I think I started it but never got very far. They had it available on Vanderbilt’s mainframe. But the one that we would play freshman year was a similar game featuring the famously frustrating phrase “You are in a twisty maze of passageways, all alike”. A search on Google for “you are in” and “all alike” (I had forgotten the exact wording of the rest) reveals the name of the game is Colossal Cave.
Oh my yes, that’s quite funny. The first text-based game I played was called “Cranston Manor” on an Apple II+. But it wasn’t completely text-based. You were occasionally treated to green-screen pictures. I still play the text-based Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy on the Internet from time to time, just to frustrate myself.

Yeah I remember that game. It was a lot of fun. I always waited until all of you went to bed before I played it. I thought it would be a bad example if you knew I wasted my time playing such silly games. Incidentally, Mr. Cowart who worked for Southern Bell was on to Charley and Charley’s parents had to pay big time.
