Claire Wins JV County (chart included)

xc-county-2011-start.jpgClaire has had very good runs this year getting her personal best two weeks ago with 22 min 13 seconds in 95 degree plus weather at Berry. It was so hot and dusty I was worried she would not finish, but not only did she finish, she came in third in the JV race beating about 400 other girls from multiple states. She worked hard this summer in training, and she has learned to manage her asthma medication in a disciplined way.

xc-county-2011-mile-1.jpgSo with the cool weather Saturday morning for the county races, the conditions for a good run were in place. Claire lined up and came out running fast with 160 other JV girls. She and one of her friends were leading everyone at the 1 mile mark. Then at the 2 mile mark, Claire was ahead of her friend by about 20 seconds. And then as she came up on the 3 mile mark, she was so far ahead of everyone, the crowd did not realize Claire was part of the race. xc-county-2011-finish.jpgIt looked like the pack way behind her made up the lead runners, and people were cutting in front of the raceway right in front of Claire. I had to yell “Clear the track! Clear the track!”

It’s hard to describe this, unless you’ve been to these races, but the lead Claire had was almost confusing. Kathy and I couldn’t believe it. Had Claire pushed too hard? Was she going to be able to make it? But every time we saw her in what is basically a twisty-turning figure 8 course, she looked calm and comfortable with her run.

xc-county-2011-finish-line.jpgClaire finished with an absolutely amazing time of 20 min 23 sec. (That’s Kathy stepping onto the course to get the shot. And HC friend Bob Williams doing chute duty.) Claire was all smiles and, while breathing hard, very happy with her run. Her coach came over and couldn’t believe it. “You just decided to skip 21?” meaning she wasn’t going to have a personal best in the 21 minute range, skipping right over to it and well into the 20 min range.

To try to comprehend what she did, I made a chart. (Of course I would.)

xc-county-mcc-9-17-2011.png

There were two races: 160 Junior Varsity girls and 140 Varsity girls. I’ve charted the top 50 of both races.

The bright yellow dot is Claire coming in first for the blue-line JV race. Notice the time gap between her and the next runner. The next four runners were all Brookwood girls and *they* had great times!

You do not see that kind of gap between any other two runners, although there is a similar, but smaller gap in the red-line Varsity run. The distance represented by Claire’s first place gap is enormous.

But as big as that gap is, look at the two yellow lines. That is Claire’s previous personal best and her new time. That is a tremendous improvement between two races.

Also notice that if Claire had run in the red-line Varsity race, she would have come in 23rd out of 140 Varsity runners! It so happens, that time put her in the elite top 7 at Brookwood. She is now one of the 7 who, if they all keep their current times up, go to state.

None of us (including Claire) knew she was heading for state in cross country. One team parent asked, “Who is that finishing so far ahead?” Another shouted, “That’s Claire Cashin our champion hurdler!!!”

home-coming-2011.jpgWho knows where that girl is going next? However, I can tell you, she got all dolled up and looked just fab for home coming that same day. And then on Sunday she did us proud with her first lector duty at Life Teen mass.

And I should mention, she did a lot of this driving herself around. She passed her driver’s test earlier last week. A very busy week. I hope she gets some rest. But poor thing… this is what is on her screen right now. Not sure she likes these charts as much as I like mine. 🙂

Love, You As A Third Grader

KEC-3rd-Grade-Letter_0001.jpg

KEC-3rd-Grade-Letter.jpg

Kelly’s third grade teacher, Mr. Franklin, had a tradition of having the kids write a letter to their future senior-in-high-school selves. Kelly’s letter to Kelly arrived this past week, thanks to a great teacher.

Dear Kelly,

How am I? I better be exellent! because your my future and I want my future to be perfect. Now let me tell you a little bit about yourself. You want to be an author, and you want to have a healthy family. Have you ever wondered who the people are in your class? because now you are going to have a lot to learn. You hate those dumb guys (who are not important) Kyle, Tripp, Cody. My best friends are Rachel Cousiar, Taylor Jarrol, Jenniffer Coe, Arielle Byington, and Nikki Weaver (who lives in our neighborhood.)

My teacher is Mr. Franklin he has brown hair and is real funny and nice (but he can get a little strict; he lets us have fun Friday and loves Georgia bulldogs. Your hobbies are soccer, swimming, writeing, drawing, and reading. I wear glasses and have short golden brown hair. I’m pretty scared when I’m alone at night. I hope you brightened up your day!

Love,

You as a third grader

Dear Kelly,

I hope I wasn’t too strict on you. I always described you as “fiesty.” I bet you still are! You were a cute skinny little 3rd grader. Congrats on your graduation!

Mr. Franklin

Claire Leads in JV County Prelims

Claire took first out of 32 girls for the JV County prelims in 100 and 300 hurdles. Finals are Monday.

For the 300 hurdles you can see Claire take off from the 4th position and take the lead before the turn. She says she likes to start off fast. You can also hear her teammates shout as she rounds the bend. (Please excuse the Blackberry quality video.)

Here she just beats the girl in green in the 100 hurdles.

Happy yappH 01-11-10

Driving Kelly and Claire to school this morning, I noticed the date on the VW dash: 01-11-10. I said, “That’s an odd looking date.”

Kelly looked at it and said, “Hey, that’s a palindrome! Same forwards as backwards.” She then quickly calculated that 01-02-2010 was another one that just happened. I had a hard time visualizing it as quickly as the girls were able to. (I need a VW dashboard crutch.) But she is right.

I then asked, “Do palindromes involves letters and words only, or do they include numbers?” Without Google in the car, we could not answer the question, but sure enough, there are palindromic numbers. Cool.

And in seeing the spelling, is Sarah Palindromic?

Precarious Situation

Driving Kelly to S.A.T.s at 6:55 a.m. in the dark… she munching on her breakfast….

K: “What does precarious mean?”

J: “Unstable… dangerous… I think it implies there could have been better preparation. Maybe as in taking ‘pre care’.”

K: “OK. I need some good vocabulary words for my essay. If you work in good vocabulary words you get extra points.”

J: “It is often used with the word ‘situation’ as in… The girl found herself in a precarious situation when she did not bring vocabulary words with her to the S.A.T.”

K: “I’m not sure I’ll use that word.”

A Summer Summary – MCC

One of Claire’s first high school projects was to make a presentation that summarized her summer. A summer summary. She decided to make a T-Shirt shaped poster board with symbols on the front and poetry on the back.

MCC-Summer-2009-poster-front.jpg MCC-Summer-2009-poster-back.jpg

zebra print and giraffe print = zoo

popcorn = movies

blue ribbon = swimming

paint brush = painting new room

yellow curtain = decorating house

splashing person = pool time

cross and sleeping bag = church retreats

Coca Cola = trip to world of coke

spilled nail polish = nail painting

sand blob = beach

moon and stars = staying up late

cake and balloons = birthdays

P.S.

There is a wreath behind Claire’s head on the pantry door, so that is not a strange haircut.

Happy Graduation Day, Happy Mother’s Day, Happy Birthday

Kathy, Kelly, Claire and I drove to Spring Hill friday in time for a mini tour of Danny’s place and the Baccalaureate mass. St. Joseph’s chapel was packed, but we were lucky to get some seats next to the choir. The setting sun made the chapel glow golden as you can see in the gallery under Stonegate.

We had a nice dinner out and attended the party on the lawn. The next morning, we got up and made it back to campus in plenty of time to witness the procession through the avenue of the oaks. The proceedings were very nice. “Like something out of the movies,” Kathy said. Terrific weather.

Danny landed a front row seat. Nicole called him from Armenia in the middle of the ceremonies to sing him “Happy Graduation Day.” After the class photos were finished, Danny declared he was ready to go home. So instead of staying for the extra day as originally planned, we all dove into our cars, got packed, and headed home. The dogs were glad to have us all back early.

That meant Kathy got to have her usual breakfast in bed for mother’s day. Claire and Kelly cooked many fruity pancakes using blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, bananas, apples, and blackberries. Gramalie went up to Athens to celebrate mother’s day and Grant’s birthday. On the way back she stopped by to see the photos of graduation, and sit on the porch for a glass of wine. We then all went out for a delicious mother’s day dinner.

A packed weekend.

The Ostrich – A Parable

Kelly and Jessica got one of the highest grades in their class for this video parable about a selfish bird that gets a second chance to help others with their problems. Madison and Claire both played key roles.

What I like about this video is how Kelly and Claire have applied many of the things they’ve learned using a video camera and iMovie. The fast talking hummingbird interacting with the regular talking ostrich is well done. The stop-motion intro credits are very clever. Nice use of slow motion and backwards time. Even a good sound track! 5 Stars! (And an A.)

A’s = 10 iTunes

Claire worked hard for another semester and earned all “A”s as well as 10 new songs for her iPod. This reminds me of buying 45 records when I was a kid. Only I never earned 10 songs for making all “A”s.
