Dear Uncle Edward,

Enclosed are the sketches I have developed for each of the 11 chapters. Some are closer to being finished than others, but I think each will give you an idea of what I can do. I edited some of the text with thick black pen. Mostly adding commas to build in pauses in longer sentences or to separate compound sentences.

The finished drawings will be cleaner and will incorporate some screened shading for uniforms, shadows, etc. This screening is done by cutting out the shapes on a light board– much like tracing, only using a knife. Adds a lot to the drawing.

If any are objectionable, or if you have a better idea, feel free to edit and/or delete at will. After all, it’s your book!

I have also enclosed a sample of what can be done with a Macintosh and a laser printer. The resolution of this typesetting is 300 dots per inch. This can be used for final product for free, or once complete, the final version can be printed with a service bureau for a few dollars per page on a 1,200 dot per inch Linotron.

If you can provide me with the final copy on diskette, I can then drop the text into PageMaker on the Macintosh, converting quoted titles to italics, quotes to “curly” quotes (note how the beginning quote is different than the end), etc. Since most of the work is actually keying the text, you would be saving the labor cost of having it retyped.

The sketches are my originals which I will need to work from if you want me to proceed.

And let me apologize here at the end for the delay. In the past 4 weeks I have closed on my town house, bought a new house, gotten a new position in the company, and been on an extended business trip in Arizona. Somewhere in all that, the time just flew by.

Let me know what you think.

Bev,

Enclosed are my April statement balances for checking and savings. These balances do not reflect the $1,800 I netted from the closing of my town house last Friday. That has been deposited to checking.

I have also included a copy of the letter I sent to Chevy Chase. I have not heard from them yet.

I received a letter in the mail yesterday from the credit bureau that informed me about the report that was generated for you. It pointed out the Chevy Chase item and a judgment against me for $500+ dollars in Dekalb Magistrate Court.

I don’t know if that is important, and I think we discussed it in your office. When the people backed out on the day of closing two years ago, I told them I considered their earnest money in forfeit. They sued me for the $500 plus a bunch of legal costs. The judge let them have their earnest money back. I was surprised.

Let me know if you need anything else.

–Jeb

Dear Joann,

I was told by one of the Chevy Chase Visa customer representatives to fax you the enclosed information. They have no information on the account number listed below, and asked that I have you research it.

I am attempting to get a home mortgage. The only “flaw” on my CBI credit report is with Chevy Chase Visa, account number 4013 0610 2908 1234. This report shows 1 occurrence of 30 days late and 2 occurrences of 60 days late.

I have never used a Chevy Chase Visa card account.

Please research this account and contact CBI to have this item removed from my credit report. I will need a phone number that the mortgage company can call to confirm this.

My business address is:

   &nbsp  John H. Harland Co.

Fifth’s Disease

Alice called to warn that she I may have been exposed to Fifth’s Disease which would be bad for me to expose to Kathy. She was in a calm panic because she had been diagnosed with it and was contacting everyone she may have passed it on to.

I would have gotten it from Bennett at guy’s night out last weekend. After many phone calls and much controversy, Kathy, Nancy, Ted, and I have decided not to worry about ourselves.

I feel for Alice who has been threatened with fetal blood transfusions. The malicious doctors threatened Danny with such things in his second week.

Cliff House and Tame Men

Went house shopping today while people stomped through our house. We’ve been getting kicked out of the house a lot lately. Guess that’s good. Can’t get a buyer without a looker.

Kathy has had her eyes on one place for almost two years. It is in the same general neighborhood as the house we almost bought two years ago. It has been for sale the entire time. Looked like a great deal, and was even on a cul d’ sac.

We drove up into the vacant house’s driveway. Kathy jumped out and started peeking in the windows. I started following the sloping lot. Followed it right to the edge of a cliff not 10 yards away from the house.

Standing at the edge, we could look way down and make out what looked like bugs. Turned out to be kids playing way down at the base of the cliff.

cliff-house-1992-04.gifI told Kathy that if one of us didn’t fall over this cliff, the house surely would. So next I went to check the foundation. You could see the fault line cracking straight up through the foundation. About a fifth of the house was trying to fall over that cliff, just like California falling into the sea.

Later I was telling Ted about it. Ted said it would take some earth spikes, pilings, and other such reinforcement things to keep it secure. This may be the perfect house for a civil engineer, but not for us.

Saturday night was guys night out with Frank. Frank organized it. It was Frank’s night in, because we all met over at his house and stayed there. Played poker and ate some chilli that Stephanie had made. In attendance at various times were: Ted, Ken, Harrison, Bennett, Rick, Greg (Stephanie’s brother), Mr. Butker, Jimmy, Stephanie, Lauren, and Shelly with sleepy Allison. Once again, the guys proved they could be much tamer than the women.

Round Glasses

Kathy put in her last night at SportsLife. I don’t know if selling Melaleuca will ever make us a dime, but at least she can’t catch tuberculosis from Gold Bar Soap.

After wearing the same frames for 7+ years, I got new glasses.

jc-glasses-1992-04.gifI’ve gone from the aviator glasses (which I was told dated me to the early eighties) to a more contemporary round look.

They weigh less, cost a lot more, and my prescription hasn’t even changed. Fortunately we have eye insurance at work.

Upon Dextral’s advice, I got my old glasses tinted for $35.

Pretty good for some eighties sun glasses.

Happy Hollow

Kathy and I ran for the mountains. Carol watched the kids Friday afternoon then turned them over to Mom & Dad for the rest of the weekend.

We headed up for Habersham Hollow, a bed & breakfast somewhere near Clarkesville, GA. Kathy kept calling it Happy Hollow.

After a few missed turns and the help of a friendly Exxon station employee, we found our way up a dirt road closer to Helen than Clarkesville. When we arrived, we got to choose between the bed in the house or a tiny cottage. We took the cottage for privacy. It was literally a one-room cottage, though the bathroom was enclosed, and there was a loft.

EEEEEEEs

Nicole brought home another excellent report card. She and her teacher discussed the B in Science. Apparently it was very close to an A. Ms. Bonds looked over and over to see if there was any way Nicole could get the extra point to make it an A, but couldn’t work it.

I told Nicole that we should have worked on an extra-credit science project as soon as she realized she might get a B. Nicole thought that was a good idea. Have to remember it for next time. Teachers love extra credit projects.

She also got straight EEEEEEEEEEEEEEE’s across the bottom. That was always the place I got a lot of NNNNNNN’s. All those non-academic behavioral categories.

Notre Dame sure didn’t ask what my N/S/E average was. None the less, I’m glad Nicole is good at making EEEEEEEEEEE’s. People who make EEEEEEE’s rarely go to jail.

Shrunken Nicole and The Little Old Man

Spent Saturday morning with Danny and Lane at the office. Kathy watched Nicole and Kathy as Peter and Lynn went to a birthing tour. On the way to the office, the three of us stopped by Nancy and Ted’s to help load their broken color TV into their new van.

Lane looks a lot like Nicole did when she was 3 or 4. So I walked ahead of the two of them and whispered to Shawn, who was waiting at the door, “Don’t say anything, but Nicole shrunk last night. She’s much smaller and very embarassed about it.”

Shawn’s eyes got real big as Danny and Lane came up to the door. Nancy (who had overheard me) demanded that I explain who Lane was.

We spent the entire afternoon eating lunch and sitting on the back porch with Peter Wonderly and Lynn Poor-Wonderly. The kids played all around us. The day was cool, but the sun felt good.

That night we went over to Tom and Jeannette’s to hear all about Melaleuca, Inc.’s multi-level marketing. Kathy is going to try to get others involved. Should be a good summer project. She wants to make the Ruby level which gives a $400 car allowance. Who am i to object.

Nicole, Danny and I went over to Mom & Dad’s while Kathy studied for the final of her final exams. Finally got the dreaded bassinet loaded up into Mom’s car to deliver back to Mr. and Mrs. Garies. I hope Lisa’s new baby doesn’t fall out of the rickety thing.

Mom gave Danny a cardboard detective’s kit that came on the top of a Life cereal box. The contents all centered around searching for Waldo. Included was a master disguise made up of funny glasses and a card board mustache. Danny loved putting it on, just sure that no one recognized him. He would assume a stiff, old man expression and try to talk with a deep voice.

1992-03-little-old-man.gifLater that night, he put the disguise on to avoid going to bed. “I’m not Danny. I’m a little old man.” So I told him that only the kids had to go to bed. Little Old Men could stay up as late as they wanted.

Nicole had a fit, which got Kathy tickled.

Danny promptly went downstairs and began watching TV. When Kathy went downstairs and saw him sitting stiffly on the couch, laughing at the TV with a throaty HO HO HO, she lost control.

She laughed so loud and hard that her stomach hurt the rest of the night. As soon as she would get control, Danny would just look at her with his grim, little, old man expression, and she would start all over.

He eventually turned back into Danny and sent himself to bed, delighted that he had fooled everyone.

A bit later, this little old man voice came from the darkness of his room. I yelled from our room, “I’m going to come in and give all short people a spanking.”

The little old man went to sleep.

Essay

Nicole C.

A Dream became upon a man named Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In Washington D.C. he gave his speech in pride. A very sad moment appeared. In a Hotel he died the year was 1968. A man shot Martin Luther King. Justice was almost over until one day people listened and decided to do what his speech was about and his Dream came true. Justice Isn’t over and His dream should last forever. Martin Luther King Jr. is a great man for what he did. Even though he went to jail sometimes he still is a great man. This man is very brave. He did marches but sometimes he was put in jail because of his marches but he didn’t care. We should be happy for what he did. This was a very special moment for Martin Luther King Jr.
