Blue Bird Blues

Kathy, Kelly, Claire, and I headed out early this morning for a stop at Waffle House and to get the two girls’ passports. (Both parents have to appear at the application office.) I spotted a small bird next to the neighbor’s mailbox. It looked large enough to hop, but too small to fly. Suddenly the mother bird landed on top of the mailbox with a worm in its mouth. Kathy exclaimed, “It’s a blue bird!” We don’t see them very often, but we have seen them more near our house this year.

I proposed we catch the baby and keep it in a bird cage until he gets big enough to let go. Kathy thought it would be better to let the mother take care of it. So off we went on our trip for waffles and passports. When we returned, the girls went looking for the baby blue bird, but they could not find it.

Later in the day, Kathy spotted an exploded pile of down feathers, some with the unmistakable bright blue, next to the neighbor’s fence. It looked as if a cat (or maybe Stout?) had caught the baby bird. I then noticed a lot of the feathers on top of a fence post above the pile. I think a hawk or owl caught the baby bird blue bird, which would explain the exploded pile of feathers around and on top of the fence post.

Poor baby blue bird. May be destined to be bones on paper.

DC’s Senior Night

The entire Stonegate family including Gramalie and Grandad showed up for DC’s “Senior Night”. Nicole drove in from Athens. We all stood on the field before the beginning of the game as the announcer read Danny’s bio. It was a very nice event, and Brookwood then went on to clobber the opponents invoking the 10 run mercy rule.

Wet or Dry Shows

When Mary Claire was little, she would talk about a movie or TV show being wet or dry. Kathy and I couldn’t figure out what she was talking about, so we had to get translator Kelly to figure it out. (Older siblings are useful for this.) Kelly went through a list of shows and had Mary Claire tell her which were wet and which were dry. Mary Claire had an immediate answer for each one.

Kelly finally deduced that cartoons are “wet” and shows with real people are “dry”. It was obvious once she figured it out, although I’m not sure why.

Tonight at dinner (some 5 years later) Claire wondered why herself. She decided that she must have thought pouring water in the TV would make some shows colorful cartoons and when the TV dried out, real people would show up. Kelly immediately dismissed this as the reason. I said, “Claire would have a better glimpse into what she thought as a kid than you would.”

“I suppose,” said Kelly, who probably really thought I was all wet.

Google Maps and Danny’s Mound

Google announced the addition of satellite maps to their beta mapping site: maps.google.com. You can now zoom in and out and drag a photo map just like you can a drawn map. In this snapshot, the arrow points to the mound where Danny pitches at Brookwood. Click on this to see the theoretical flight path of a ball hit slightly left of center. Such a ball could actually knock out the window of Danny’s bedroom, which apparently directly faces the field.

FOPAB Update Q1-2005

The big event for the quarter was Kathy and Danny’s trip to Jamaica to work with the Missionaries of the Poor. Like Jeb and Nicole who went a year ago, both reported having an amazing experience working with the brothers and the poor in the slums of Kingston. Kathy, who was very nervous before the trip, cannot wait to go back. Both wrote very inspiring articles that can be found here: www.sjnlilburn.org/documents/NNEaster2005.pdf.

Nicole is wrapping up her UGA undergraduate degree. Her band “The Psychic Hearts” will be playing at Music Midtown in Atlanta. They were one of 14 local bands chosen from 400 who applied to play at this huge festival. Danny earned the starting pitcher position for Brookwood this season, and helped kick off the season with a win. However, he injured his back shortly after that and is going through rehabilitation which includes electric shock therapy (to the back… not head.) He has been accepted to 3 of his 4 colleges (Spring Hill, UGA, and Augusta) and is still waiting to hear from Notre Dame.

Kelly and Claire are very busy with soccer, piano, and art. Kelly scored in her first game. Like their brother, they both injured themselves early in the season and missed a couple of games, but both are back 100%. Kelly received a perfect score for her violin evaluation, and a superior rating in her piano federation. Claire received a perfect score (straight A’s) on her last report card. She also discovered she is a terrific basketball player having just completed her first season.

Jeb joined the Knights of Columbus and went through the secret indoctrination to become a First Degree Knight. It was a very unusual experience, but he can only talk about it with other Knights in good standing.

World Water Day

The DJs on the radio were trying to figure out Google’s logo today:

Kathy and I looked at it and decided it had something to do with water… perhaps conserving water. Later Kathy figured it out and sent me this e-mail:

I found that when I put the cursor over the Google the bottom of the screen explained what it means: World Water Day.

How is that for free advertising for Google? A bunch of DJs talking about the logo for more than a minute. Then they started trying to look up funny word combinations to see how many hits they got.

Shock Treatment

DC, KEC, and MCC have all been hit with injuries, taking them out of baseball and soccer. Mary Claire strained a muscle in her upper leg and had to be carried off the field. She could hardly walk for the next two days. After about 8 days, she was finally able to go out, warm up with her team, and play just as aggressive as ever.

Kelly hyperextended her knee last week and also had to be carried off the field. She was able to play only briefly in her game this weekend because her leg is still sore.

Danny tore a muscle in his back-left side in practice. (He only practices pitching.) He was unable to pitch his next game. With the mounting losses, the coaches sure want their starter back. One advantage to being a varsity player is the special attention he gets. The coach sent Danny in for some special treatments including heat therapy and, on Friday, “shock therapy”. The therapist hooked up four wires to Danny’s back and turned on the juice. His arm and back twitched uncontrollably. The wires were placed on several parts of his back and the shocks repeated. Danny said it was really strange.

Saturday morning, Danny felt noticeably better. He may be able to pitch as early as next Saturday.

Dogs Pick Top 7

Kathy is an American Idol addict. Every year we all clear our schedules and sit down as a family to watch and debate who is going to win. Danny and I can’t help but get sucked in. And now the two dogs have been sucked in.

Claire came up with a scientific test to figure out who is going to win. Imagine a large piece of paper on the floor with a grid of dog bones, each bone having a name written under it. Claire recorded all of this in a lab notebook and performed several tests.

Kathy (a.k.a. circleskirt) posted all of this on the American Idol forum. So far there have been 81 responses. The weird thing is, it could very well go the way the dogs voted. Of course the other weird thing is that this is all going on as I come home from work….

Excerpts below. Oh yeah… what’s the opposite of cirkcleskirt? (Get it?)
