FOPAB Update Q1 2007

Biggest news is that Jeb’s company is being acquired once the Department of Justice says ok. Good thing Jeb embraces change because there will be some. Jeb’s other big(ger) news is that he will be substituting for Uncle Bill in the B.S.R.C. golf tournament. Dan Sr. has been giving Jeb lessons at the church and driving range. Verdict is still out.

Nicole moved from a shack down by the river to a nice house in Grant’s neighborhood. If Grant yelled “hey Nicole!” off his back deck, she would be able to hear him. Nicole has a new housemate who joined her for Mary Claire’s 12th birthday celebration in Snellville.

Danny is finishing out his sophomore year at Spring Hill and started with the baseball team. Kathy, Jeb, Kelly, Claire, and the two dogs all drove down to watch him pitch in purple.

Kelly continues her high school athletics running track this spring. (She ran cross country in the fall and lettered as a freshman!) She is doing well in school and in Life Teen at church.

Claire is doing great in middle school. She worked so hard to make straight A’s she was awarded an iPod nano. (Why is middle school so ridiculously hard?) She is playing at the top of her game in soccer. She is also attending The Edge (middle school pre-Life Teen) where Kathy and Jeb are helping lead 300 very loud and energetic middle schoolers. Only 4 more sessions to go… Amen.

Happy Birthday Claire!

We had a fun evening celebrating Claire’s 12th birthday. She wanted to go to Macaroni Grill. Nicole and her new housemate, Kristen, were coming in from Athens. Gramalie and Grandad also joined us. There was a little confusion because Kathy made reservations at the Snellville Macaroni Grill, but I had told everyone to go to the one near Gwinnette Place Mall. “No wonder you were worried about us being late,” she said, when we finally realized the miscommunication.

Dinner was good and a lot of fun. We covered the table with drawings. Nicole and Kristen headed back to Athens, and the rest of us headed to “The Singing Bean” in Lawrenceville, a karaoke coffee house in Lawrenceville. It is a very strange but Kathy and the girls think it is a lot of fun. Gramalie says she enjoyed it, although she had a look of concern on her face. Grandad and I sat outside of the karioke room most of the time, sipping our decaf coffee, but we enjoyed the odd experience, and we certainly enjoyed helping celebrate Claire’s birthday.

Happy Birthday Claire!

Claire Hair

mcc-short-hair.jpglocks-of-love.gif

Over a year-and-a-half ago, Claire read about Locks of Love in a book and decided to grow her hair long to help children who lose their hair to cancer treatments. Kelly decided to join in, too. Claire started with the disadvantage of already having short hair, so it took her longer to get enough hair. So while it may seem like she is following in her big sister’s footsteps (hairsteps?) Claire was really the leader on this project.

Of course, we’re just proud when our two girls decide to do anything good together. Both girls look as cute as can be in their short hair and both enjoyed going to a fancy salon to get their free haircuts, but pay attention Grant, Andrew, and Michael! The youngest can lead! (Fiona… maybe you can read this to Michael.)

Under Cabinet Lights

When we bought Stonegate, we picked up several left overs including a BB gun and an unopened kit for halogen under cabinet lights. The BB gun cleaned up well and works great. But more than once I’ve started to install the lights in the kitchen and stopped. All of the wiring, transformers, dimmer, and connections were just too complicated to knock out quickly.

I pulled everything out over the holidays and decided to tackle it again. It turned out to be a full day job with all of the drilling and wiring, but Kathy is now quite tickled to have under cabinet lights in the kitchen.

A 3-setting dimmer came with the kit. A wire from the dimmer box runs to one of the cabinet hinges. Touching the hinge toggles from off / low / medium / high.

In practice, we now use the lights on low or medium and then often keep the overhead lighting off or lower than we would in the past, so I think we are saving energy, but the kitchen lighting certainly is a lot nicer.

A plus was that Kathy decided to move the under cabinet radio to the planning desk next to the refrigerator. Because it has a light, we now have under cabinet lighting all the way around, and the planning desk is nicer to use, since it is lighted.

(Bob: You would be proud of me on this one.)

20th Anniversary Security Alert

After going shopping for our 20th wedding anniversary, which meant some special gifts, the following message was waiting on our answering machine. Good thing I was able to intercept and delete it before Kathy could hear it.

Unfortunately I had to be out of town on our anniversary, so I carefully hid four gifts in and around the house. As each girl got up, they handed an envelope to Kathy who went on a treasure hunt using clues. (Taking advantage of different start and stop times for middle school and high school.) It worked out great, because she was surprised to get the first one, and then surprised to get the second one, and then had no idea that as each girl came home from school, they would hand her another envelope each. And of course each present she found was… well… more reason for a security phone call than the one prior.

Kathy probably will never mind me leaving for our anniversary again.

Merry Christmas!

Between church and dinner, we took advantage of being dressed up and snapped a family photo. Dogs included. This one came out pretty well. Only one of the 8 of us had to be brought in digitally. Can you tell which one?

Our Christmas Card

Cow Christmas CardSome notes on our Christmas card. The cow came from Kathy’s painting she finished in August. It now hangs in the dining room. The Christmas tree came from the trip Nicole and I took to Jamaica. I used it in a talk I recently gave to 300 middle schoolers at St. John Neumann. The talk was about hope and the Christmas tree on the street in the slums of Kingston was one of several signs of hope.

Claire and Danny both did a good job helping on the assembly line. Kathy recommends using photo corners instead of cutting slits in the card.

Note to self: Lighten up all photos sent to Sam’s Club. They come out darker than what shows on screen. Maybe send a test of several levels of brightness. Try something other than AppleWorks since it has a bug allowing only 1 copy to print at a time.

Understanding A Gigabyte

Kelly and I were driving around shopping together, and we started talking about iPods. She is quite happy with her iPod nano and its protective green and pink iSkin. Kids at school like it how hers looks. (She was allowed to bring it to school in the last week of the semester.)

Case4.jpgShe does wish she had 4 gigabytes like Claire’s instead of just 1 Gigabyte. I pointed out that she made that choice when I offered to pay half of whatever she wanted. “Yeah… but I didn’t really understand a gigabyte… I have to spend more time moving music on and off my Nano.” But otherwise, she is quite happy with it.

I told her I was thinking about getting the 80 gigabyte iPod. She was impressed. “How many songs would that hold?” she asked. I explained that all of the music we have on our iMac adds up to 20 gigabytes. She immediately got that the extra space could be for videos and TV shows.

I did not think to tell her that our very first Mac with a hard drive only had 20 megabytes of hard disk space. That’s a mere 20% of her Nano.

The tech moral of the story: Always buy up on storage/memory space.

One word: WOW!

For this next girl I have only one word… WOW! — Coach B

That’s how Coach B introduced Kelly as he announced her to come up for one of five special “coach’s awards.” That was the third time Kelly was called up for the evening. When Kathy, Claire, and I joined Kelly for the Cross Country banquet, we had early confirmation that she had lettered for the season, much to our and both coaches’ surprise. But we did not know she was going to be called up to stand in front of the crowd for two other reasons. First she was called up and recognized for being a Scholar Athlete. The photo below shows the new athletics director shaking her hand.

I wondered how she achieved Honors Athlete when she had not gotten her first high school report card. The director explained that for freshmen, given cross country is a fall sport, they used the previous semester middle school grades. So here good work in middle school paid off immediately in high school!

Next she was called up with the group that had achieved their letters. In the photo below, you can see her standing near coach B.

The big surprise was at the end when Coach B announced 5 special awards. That’s when he introduced Kelly with the “Wow” word as he explained she had gone from just barely being able to qualify, to not finishing her first meet, to shaving off almost 8 minutes through the season to qualify for a letter in the final meet. For that she earned most improved and got a special award plate handmade by Coach B’s wife. One of the other winners can be seen in crutches. She ran state with a broken bone in her foot that had to have surgery three days after the season ended.

I asked Kelly if she got tired having to keep going up front. Nope.
