Birthday photo by Kathy:
(New hammock. Can you find Stout?)
The girls helped me move into my new office earlier in the year. They decorated the office with among other things, some white board art. I kept it up as long as I could, then took this snapshot when I needed to use it myself. Shades of the pending merger can be seen among the girls’ art and check ideas. Smerd makes an appearance.
Claire made the county swim meet this year which was at Georgia Tech’s Olympic Stadium, which has since been enclosed since we last swam down there.
I took a movie with Canon digital camera just to see what would happen. This is Claire’s medley team with her leading off backstroke. I used Movie HD to export it to a web QuickTime movie then posted on YouTube. I do not necessarily recommend watching the entire thing, but you can see where Claire gets a good lead at the flip turn. (She is 4th lane from left.)
Claire finished first year middle school with straight A’s. All total she earned an iPod mini and 40 iTunes songs. And I do mean earned. (Hard work.) She finished soccer and then joined a summer swim team. Danny has been giving her stroke lessons.
Danny finished his sophomore year at Spring Hill getting in some good innings on the baseball team (Badgers.) He came home for the summer, went to life guard school, and is now managing a pool not too far away. He is learning how hard it is to depend on teenage staff. (Of course he’ll be a teenager himself for a few more weeks… then boom! He’s 20!) He and his girlfriend Amanda have traded a couple of visits, with a relatively short drive between Chattanooga and Snellville. We have enjoyed her visits.
Nicole is constantly finding ways to save money, and has added a third housemate to help share rent in Athens. She continues to sell “retro” items through her booth in a local flea market, including some purses Kathy made. She loves finding things that cost $1 and selling them for $10. Her Honda got a bad dent from a friend who backed into her. They are still friends. Her band has been able to perform in a few shows, and they are getting ready to do a 16-track recording session, which is moving up (from 8 track?)
Kelly finished her freshman year earning a second letter, this time in Track & Field. She remains active in LIfe Teen at church, and turned in a pretty solid academic year. She is already training for cross country, so while Claire gets up early for swim practice, Kelly gets up early to run 4 or 5 miles.
Kathy put in several weeks of class time and hard study to pass (with high marks) her state license exam for real estate. She can now sell our house and pay herself commission. (We’re not moving.) If you know anyone who wants to leave or move into the Lilburn / Snellville / Lawrenceville area, there is an expert in the family.
My company was officially acquired. The new company is Harland Clarke, and is nearly twice the size. While it has been strange to watch most of leadership change over, there are plenty of good people from both companies working hard together. You can see an example of my work (see lead article) at www.harlandclarke.com/dv.
I also got to play in the B.S.R.C. golf tournament this year which was a lot of fun. I’m hoping Grant will join the Knights of Columbus soon so that he, too, can get invited. Like the Knights, most of what happens at B.S.R.C. is secret, so I can’t write much more.
Father’s day was fun. Kathy and the girls headed up to the mountains to visit her dad, and go dancing of all things. Meanwhile three of us Cashin dads and a variety of family joined for grilling out in Snellville which included a swim and cigars. See Julie’s photos on the Tucker blog at mac.fiveforks.com.

Wedding reception ruined because of high-tech game on Tybee Saturday evening.
Geocaching is supposed to be a harmless game in which techno-savvy treasure hunters use Global Positioning Devices to find trinkets hidden in remote locations.
But a Saturday trek for hidden “treasure” under the Tybee Pavillion turned out to be anything but harmless.
Danny worked all day cleaning up the Wrangler so we can put it up for sale. He’s in charge of selling it and gets a commission. We plan on parking it up at the local auto show (Home Depot parking lot.) He and I also posted it on Craigslist.com…

Claire and I were watching some of the new Apple TV ads over the internet. Computer Genius, Party Is Over, and Choose a Vista. We were watching them on my Dell laptop (PC.) They stopped playing correctly, and I had to restart my browser. I told her I thought this might be irony at work.
When I closed the browser, she saw my Lotus Notes mailbox and saw the number 6,562 next to my Inbox. “Six thousand five hundred and sixty two,” she said, “Wow!”
I explained that was the count of unread messages. She mused, “Unread messages… the most I ever have is two.”
I’m not sure which us was more amazed. Surely life is better if the you only have two unread messages.
(And no, that is not an accurate number, but I can’t really explain it here.)
Kathy missed her breakfast in bed routine last year because of a soccer tournament, so she was particularly looking forward to the special treatment this year. The two girls took care of writing up a menu and shuttling up Kathy’s requests. Clyde and Stout brought her the paper. She received many flowers, both for inside and out.
Spring Hill got out in time for Mother’s day, so Danny was in, and Nicole drove in to celebrate the day. After church, I took advantage of having us all together and dressed up for a backyard photo session.
Kathy got a lot of flowers as gifts for both inside and outside of the house. But the heaviest gift she got was the river-rock path that Danny and I made for her garden. This is another project that Bob would be proud of. We dug out the path, put in a 4″ plastic edge, tamped the dirt, laid down weed cloth, then poured in about 600 pounds of river rock. The ends of the path are capped with some abandoned rocks we found in the Holly Lake woods. I’d like to put some larger stepping stones along the middle.
She is quite happy with her new path. (View from bedroom window.)
Claire worked hard for another semester and earned all “A”s as well as 10 new songs for her iPod. This reminds me of buying 45 records when I was a kid. Only I never earned 10 songs for making all “A”s.

We’ve had an interesting week at Dauphin Island, and overall an enjoyable spring break. The week started off unseasonably warm but finished off unseasonably cold. So basically it has been unseasonable.
There was not much internet access, except what we could glimpse via a BlackBerry. (Limited.) But then I discovered on our last full day here that if I put the Mac laptop on a chair in a certain part of the house, we can, indeed, get internet access. It is probably just as well I did not discover this earlier.
Danny has been able to visit twice and is spending the night with us tonight and will join us for Easter mass. He had to squeeze us in between several travel baseball games and a tournament. We drove up today to watch the last game of the week. The Badgers almost came from behind, but lost 5 to 3. Danny closed last night’s 9th inning and kept the opposing team from scoring. One strike out, one pop up, and one runner thrown out. Good showing. Coach was impressed.
Highlights from the week:
Van got stuck in sandy driveway the evening we arrived:
Claire and Kathy throw the football:
Jeb sits on the sidelines…
… and builds stick art:
Kathy and girls adopt a lost dog for a couple of hours. His name turned out to be Calypso:
Jeb and Danny got to play 16 holes of golf at Spring Hill one day. He joined us for dinner and dancing. Here he and Kelly do “The Heisman” dance:
On the way to the Pelican Restaurant, we stopped to watch the sunset:
Other highlights included visiting next door neighbor, Ruth Ann, and her two 12 year-old grand kids to watch the sunset from her widow’s walk. The three girls road 7.5 miles to the fort end of the island and back. Kelly dug the deepest hole I’ve ever seen. Claire’s crab won the chilly hermit crab race. A dog named Kelly joined us for our bayside walk.
Oh… and the Department of Justice ok’d the purchase of the company, creating a stir at work in my absence.
