After watching AWStats start building for a day, I saw where “praying mantis” was one of the search phrases that brought someone to mac.fiveforks.com. That is a pretty common phrase, so I was surprised anyone would find there way here.
I noticed that Yahoo! had referred several people today, so I did a search on Yahoo but did not see mac.five. I then did a search on the Yahoo! Images search, and there was Mary Claire on the first results page looking at a praying mantis on a banana!
This comes from MCC’s Bug Page, which to Yahoo! is kind of famous.
I wondered if any pictures from my web page would show up and couldn’t find anything. I like to keep filenames to 8 letters so I wind up abbreviating the filename. Yahoo seems to look for pictures based on the filename rather than the ALT tag for the picture where I put more information.
Anyway, she isn’t there anymore, at least not in the first 5 pages.
I just checked and she was third picture on the 2nd page. I recognize all but 3 or 4 of the pictures on the first page, so I guess the new ones pushed her down. I don’t think the search results are random, or I would see many different pictures each visit. I did a search using the two words “praying mantis” but not in quotes. I did notice that these two words are under the larger version of this photo on mac.five.
Oh there she is. And the file name is “12.jpg”. So much for my theory. Maybe it can recognize gallery pages where there is very little text other than the description and the one picture . . .
