Kathy’s Garden

When we moved in, there was a plot of raised ground on the side of the house. It was clay, weeds, and old tomato cages. Kathy tried planting some vegetables, but the rabbits kept eating everything. She has now turned it into a flower garden. Our neighbors get a better view of it that we do, although you can see it from the street.

These side-by-side photos make me appreciate the difference between February and June:

The flags in the first photo marked our utilities because we were having our water main replaced. The flags in the second photo are because we are training Stout to heed the radio fence. (He figured it out in 1 day.)

  1. What I want to know about Stout and the retaining system is — Is Stout smart or his he dumb and gets shocked but care. I think a smart dog wouldn’t run through but once. Which is the situation? What did he fgure out in one day?

  2. Since a dog doesn’t really know why he is hearing a noise and why he gets shocked, he has to be trained to realize it is associated with the borders of the yard. (Dogs do not read plats so borders are not obvious.) They have to learn to associate the white flags, the warning sound, and the shock. Then it has to be reinforced over many weeks as you slowly remove a few flags each day. In the end, they are completely aware of the border and rarely hear the warning sound or ever get shocked.

Stout figured out to stay away from those flags in one day. It helps that they are as tall as he is. However we still go through training with him, walking the borders each day for six weeks. (He doesn’t get shocked anymore.)
