Tucker Day

Friday night we went over to Ted & Nancy’s for a game of Labyrinth. We never finished. The kids were very good and played quietly in Shawn’s room. We watched the movie “Naked Gun.” I was very tired, though, and kept dozing off. Everyone would laugh at a funny scene, which would wake me up. So I spent the entire movie asleep, or just missing the funniest parts. Yuck.

Saturday was fun. Nicole went school shopping with Gramalie for a new outfit. Then we all went to Tucker Day to see the parade. The Viceroy’s were the feature band prior to the parade. Got to talk to Charlie for a while in line for Bar-B-Q. They had just played in Alabama the night before and had another show that night. Weekends are the hardest when you are in a band.

It was hot and muggy, so we finished the day with a swim down at the pool. I don’t know how many more days of swimming we have left, now that the weather is starting to get cooler.

Last night I made a guest talk along with Will Cate at the AMUG monthly meeting. Stood on the stage at Emory’s White Hall to talk about my trip to the MacWorld Expo in Boston: “The Greatest Mall on Earth.”

I capped my talk my demonstrating a Video Postcard that showed me holding a lobster in front of a rolling street scene shot at Faniel Hall saying “Hi Mom I’m on Mac TV!” So I got to introduce QuickTime to the group. Pretty good for my first meeting.

Got a free mouse pad and some bright yellow sunglasses from Lotus. Nicole got the glasses.

Kathy went job hunting last Saturday. She had a follow up interview at Ruby Tuesday’s yesterday. She has decided that working one or two nights during the week would give her back her weekends, let her work hours that are more agreeable, and probably lead to more money.

***

I did something very stupid this morning. I thought I would clean my glasses by letting hot water circulate around them in the bathroom sink. Shut the plug and let the hot water run over them. I figured the water would be drained by the overflow drain at the top of the sink. Then I went off to iron my shirt.

Amazing how much water can come out of that faucet in such a short time. The overflow drain didn’t work, and I opened the bathroom door to see a bunch of water on the floor. Kathy hopped up, and we got most of the water up with towels. Then we discovered that everything under the sink was soaked, so we cleaned all of that out and dried it. Set up the fan to blow the bathroom dry.

Downstairs, Kathy felt a drop on her shoulder. The fluorescent light fixture had about an inch of water in it. The water had gone through the floor and was coming out of the light fixture hole.

I shut of the power and took the light fixture cover off, carefully tilting it toward one corner where Kathy held a bucket up to catch the water.

I had to take off the entire fixture. Light brown water started coming through stippled plaster. I set up a hair dryer connected to a vacuum cleaner hose to blow air up into the ceiling. Don’t know if that helped. Looks like we’ll have to repaint the kitchen ceiling.

Danny Rides

Ted & Nancy invited a bunch of people over for an impromptu cookout. We showed up after church. There were more people there than at most things we plan.

Bob cooked the hamburgers. Paul Barr brought his girlfriend over. It was unusual seeing Paul with a girl. She seems very nice. I think her name is Linda or Susan or Heather???

Kathy earned $35 for a marketing survey that she didn’t have to do. She showed up, and they didn’t need her but gave her the money anyway. So we all went out for ice cream at Gorin’s.

We loaded up Danny’s scooter and Nick’s bike and stopped off at Holy Cross to let the kids ride into the sunset. I was surprised at some of the daring turns Danny could make on his scooter. As it got dark, I told the kids it was time to switch. I just wondered what Danny would say.

Danny took it very seriously, put down his scooter, and walked over to get Nicole’s bike. I helped him on it, and ran behind him with my hands under his arms as he road Nicole’s bike! He got going stable enough that I could hold my hands away from him, letting him solo. Kathy and Nicole cracked up! I thought he might be able to do it, since the scooter has similar balance and feel as a bike.

We’ll get Nicole a new bike for her birthday, I guess, and paint Nicole’s pink bike green. That’s the color Danny wants to paint it.

[Claire would beat Danny’s record when she learned at 3 and a half.]

Satisfaction

Mom surprised us Friday by volunteering to watch the kids. Kathy and I went for some TCBY yogurt and a movie, “Backdraft.” We both thought the movie was very good. Kathy ran into Tommy and Daryl (?) at the concession stand, so they sat with us.

Mom has turned in her resignation at Master Graphics. Just can’t handle the rough environment. I hope she finds a nicer place to work. More professional.

The other night, I brought home a questionnaire for Kathy to complete. She pulled it out after dinner and read the title “HMO Customer Satisfaction Survey.” Danny replied, between bites, “Can’t get no.” We all cracked up.

Calcacieu Marine

Went to Lake Charles, Lousiana, Monday and Tuesday with Denise Hall from the Training Department. She is afraid of small commuter planes, so we had a one hour flight to Baton Rouge and a 2 1/2 hour drive to Lake Charles.

Met Doug Mayhall and Tommy DeBlieux (say W). Tommy knows how to ride a unicycle. We called on Calcacieu Marine Bank, an impressive building in the middle of a depressed town.

Super Freaks

Kathy’s 10 year class reunion made for a fun but exhausting weekend. The kids stayed and Grandpa’s Friday night (a first!) while Kathy and I went to County Cork. Kathy thought it was strange going to a crowded bar where you know everyone. We actually gathered in the courtyard below County Cork, only going into the bar upstairs for popcorn or bathroom breaks.

I was the only guy there who had a wife and sister in the graduating class. Bob couldn’t make it because his parents were down for a visit.

Kathy and I stayed right up to the end. Then we left with Nancy and Ted and Cam and her boyfriend, John. We all decided to meet over at our pool for a late night jacuzzi dip and swim. Out in the parking lot, Kathy, Nancy, Ted, and I hung around a few minutes trying to figure out what was going on inside a nearby Issuzu Trooper.

I think we finally stumbled into bed around 3 a.m.

Saturday, we picked up the kids and went to a tour and picnic at St. Pius. Danny brought his scooter which he road around in the parking lot. Nicole scored at least 5 baskets inside the gym with her amazing underhand toss.

Kathy was amazed at the new additions to the school, especially the bigger library, the dance studio, the band room, and the very nice theater. Not as many people turned up for the picnic as the night events.

We all dressed up for a night of dancing and yelling (over the loud music) at CAMMERRON at the Shops of Dunwoody. Kathy and I led the dancing with several of the black girls who couldn’t resist getting us all up on the dance floor when “Super Freak” started playing. Kathy had a great time and was the best looking girl there. At one point a bunch of us were up on a row of chairs on the dance floor with the manager encouraging us to get off her chairs.

Sunday was much more relaxing. The four of us joined the Regan’s up at the farm for a day of just sitting around a recuperating. Ted and I went shopping at the Levi’s outlet in Gainesville.

Sample #1

Kathy Cashin

These are the results and recommendations for the soil sample you submitted for your fescue lawn. The laboratory results show that the PH is 5.3, the phosphorus level is 14 (low), the potassium level is 176 (medium), the calcium level is 752 (adequate), and the magnesium level is 120 (medium).

The soil test results indicate that the PH of your soil is low and lime should be applied, therefore, broadcast or spread 25 lbs. of agricultural limestone per 1000 square feet.

Based upon the results the following fertilizer treatments are suggested:

For establishment, incorporate 25 lbs. of 5-10-15 per 1000 square feet into the top 4-6 inches of soil prior to seeding. In November and February apply 3 lbs of ammonium nitrate (34-0-0) per 1000 square feet. Follow this fertilization program for the first year only, then use the maintenance recommendation for the next 2-3 years. Retest 2-3 years after establishment.

For maintenance, apply 10 lbs. of 10-10-10 per 1000 square feet in September and November. In February, apply 4 lbs. of ammonium nitrate (34-0-0) per 1000 squre feet. In May, apply 1 1/2 lbs. of ammonium nitrate (34-0-0) per 1000 square feet.

Clippings do not contribute to thatch under proper management and thus, do not need to be removed. If they are removed, increase the fertilizer application rate by 30%.

Caution: Water lawn thoroughly immediately after applying fertilizer. Do not apply a fertilizer when grass is wet.

If you should have any questions, contact the county extension office.
