Orchestra Not Dorkestra

Orchestra is sometimes called the Dorkestra. There don't have a pun for band so people sometimes just say that music is dorky. This is untrue though and I can prove it. Most of the people at are considered "Dorks" do not do music. Perhaps to fit in?? The most popular people in the school (We have about 20) are all included in some music type thing from school. I am in orchestra, although I may not be the most popular person in school I am still well known, BELIEVE ME! Those who are considered "popular" that are about two notches down do not do orchestra or band. They say they are way to cool. They are the popular, not well known around the school people. So music is not so uncool!

Be wary of measuring the value of anything based on "popularity." Doing good is popular in a good crowd. Doing bad is popular in a bad crowd. That being said, I think band and orchestra is terrific, especially if you are striving to continually improve. It is also very good excercise for your brain.

Music is not uncool at all. Many happy hours will be spent listening to good music and a special song will bring back special memories. Father J is right about being wary of "popular". It's much better to be well rounded, and music helps in that regard - whether you play an instrument, are in a band, or just enjoy listening.

I remember musicians getting picked on in high school, but when I got to college and was in a band, we were the super cool ones.

It's always amazed me how little regard people paid me in elementary, middle, and high school because of the things that interested me (computers, music, art), yet once I hit college and adulthood, my talents became precious commodities.

The moral of the story? Let the others call it dorkestra. In twenty years you'll be having the last laugh for having stuck to it and developing genuine skills and a personality, to boot.

Kelly,
You are a very perceptive girl. I was in band when I was in middle school and I had a great time. The band kids always seemed more interesting and fun to me, at least. And, look how cool I am now.

:-P

You all read this. HOORAY! The word "pun" gets them every time. Also if they sound cool to (or dorky) like DORKESTRA!
