Fall
Walking down the street, the
Sky is a beautiful blue with white fluffy clouds.
We inhale the scents of the multi-color trees and
Count our blessings as the gentle wind
Flutters the leaves to the ground.
Back home again we walk up the
red carpet, to our front door.
2008
My grandson, 4 years old
had recently lost his grandad
who he loved deeply-
Weeks later
we went to McDonald’s,
his favorite chicken nugget
place and we sat in a booth.
He closed his eyes and turned
his head up to the ceiling,
and I asked
What are you doing Michael-
his answer took me by surprise-
“I’m” talking to Grandaddy.”
That same night, he said
I was going to have to be
Grandaddy and Gramalie,
from now on-
The family of deer living back in our yard
Who robbed the bird feeder from time to time
Have not shown their faces in recent weeks
But we know they are close, and keep up our guard
Trudging out in the dark to collect the feeder
Safely bringing it in night after night.
As daylight breaks, we hear the birds tweet
As if to say where are you and where is our seed.
The cardinal, pure red, is perched on the top
Waiting patiently for someone to come
Other birds flutter across back & forth
We’re coming already!
Loss & Gain
As the days are shorter
The cool air travels
From west to east
From north to south
The thermostat changes to
warm the house
The birds are hungry
Seeming to need more for warmth.
No breakfast on the porch
To watch our feathered friends
Hummingbirds are gone
To find warmer places.
Trees are fashioning colors
That don’t seem real!
We know they will soon
Cover our lawns.
Sunsets are awesome
With bright beautiful colors.
They come too soon now
Our daylight is shorter.
It’s time to be still
And meditate for longer
than I seem to have time for

The big news is The Chiefs won the Super Bowl against the 49ers in Miami. Harrison Butker scored 7 of the 31 points in a 31-20 game.
Today you are going to DePalmas with your Mahjong friends to celebrate Mary Quinn’s birthday. She is hosting Mahjong afterwards.
Tonight you are ushering (& Don) for the Curtis Symphony at the Performing Arts Center.
Claire & Mitch called you yesterday to talk about their engagement and a fall wedding. She said it will be a big wedding. You told her not to worry because her dad has plenty of money!
Don’s birthday – making a chocolate cake
William & Kristen are coming. –>
All of Don’s grand children sent gifts thanks to Bill.
–> They are coming next weekend now – due to colds.

Michael told you he won 2 matches – he didn’t tell you he lost 2 matches. He got a medium slice of cake. He asked for 2 more slices for his Mom & Fiona :-|.
He was being helpful when you went to see him and was busy putting together new kitchen chairs.
Last night you went to 4 restaurants before going to Rafferty’s. Everything was packed. You had salmon with mashed potatoes and Don had Salmon with green beans for a total of $45.
DON’S BIRTHDAY – 84
February 1 –
Don wanted an all chocolate cake for his birthday. You found a recipe for The World’s Best Chocolate Cake with “real butter.” Unfortunately Don has had a cold so your plans to have William and Kristen & the boys were cancelled. It turned out both the boys had the beginning of a cold, too.
You found 4 “large candles” for the cake that wouldn’t stay lit because they were really lighters. You melted the tops of them.
Donna, Mark and Jonathan facetimed you for a Happy Birthday song.
Don only gets once slice of cake for now. You are saving half the cake for next weekend. You told Michael he can have a big piece of cake if he wins his wrestling match today and a small one if he loses.
Jan. 30 –
Today you texted me a cute collage of photos from a Married 4 Life Cruise from 4 years ago. We had fun taking a taxi to tour Nassau and got some really cute pictures of the four of us. I guess you had enough fun to want to drive back down here for another cruise in February of last year. We did have a good time then, with a treasure hunt you won and a relaxing beach day. The 2 of you went to the beach for the rest of the week after the cruise ended.
January 29 –
Your gathering last night was, “good, lots of laughs. The girls beat the boys again :-). Some drank cordials and some just coffee. “Don and I were the only ones who drank Irish Coffee. Only one bottle emptied. It had just enuf for 2 little cordials.”
Jan. 28 –
Today you went to “Penney’s” to look for a birthday present for Don. You found a Georgia hoodie sweatshirt for $17.99 marked down from $56.00. Tonight you will go to dinner with 2 other couples and then go back to your house for Hand and Foot. You have all your liquors lined up on the bar. You have white AND green Créme de Menthe, Fireball, Cr´eme de Cacao, some blue stuff you have had for “at least 10 years.” You hope nobody gets sick.
* You told me about an upcoming mystery dinner party where you will play a “hussy” and are borrowing a black bra to stuff with socks and will wear a tight black sweater!
