Google’s Translator

I recently added a Hispanic page to the St. John Neumann website. Since I copy and paste information from our weekly bulletin to update most of the content on SJN, I did the best I could with my 3 years of high school Spanish trying to figure out how things should be presented on the Hispanic page.

This week I discovered Google’s language translation service that lets you translate an entire web page. While imperfect, it really helped me out to see what was on the page, especially with seeing information that has expired.

Picking Up Pictures at Bob’s

Bob and I were determined to figure out a way to transfer a large chunk of vacation photos using the network instead of CDs. I tried giving him access to some FTP space on the Mac. He was able to create a folder, but not upload files. Not sure I’ve got the Mac set up correctly.

He then gave me access to his server. Sent me an i.p. address, login, and password. I clicked on the ftp:// link he sent me, was prompted for the login and password, and this window opened.

Mac OS X has built in FTP client ability, and Bob’s PC was represented as a folder. After a few minutes, the ICONs for the photos in the folder started to render. (Note: The IP address has been changed in the graphic so don’t go trying to hack Bob!)

CocoaMySQL

I used a trial version of Navicat to get to the underlying MYSQL tables behind MovableType. I’ve needed to do this in the past to reset user passwords. Navicat is a bit expensive ($95) for my occasional needs.

Just found this open source utility that does everything I need. Next time I have to reset a password, I’ll send them $5.

CSS Pencils

Scott found this one. Follow his link, then wait for the color pencils to show up. It is not a picture, but instead, every dot of color (or group of 3 dots) is created with an html border tag and colored using CSS. Different style sheets control the bright, darker, red channel, etc. Follow the “About” on his page to read more about it.

Cron Settings

Set at 55:

/Library/WebServer/Documents/mt/mt-rebuild.pl -mode=”index” -blog_id=”2″ -template=”MacFive”

Set at 15 01:

/usr/local/analog/analog

Set at 25 04 01:

/usr/local/bin/mysqldump -u mysql -p***** mov_type > /network/YODAMEDIA/MOV_TYPE/mov_type_1.sql

Broke the Site

In setting up the new Mac to host MovableType, I ended up wiping out all of the MT and MT-Static code from the existing site. (Folders had same names and I thought I was operating locally.) A quick restore from the backup copies on Yoda along w/ some file permission setting (chmod 755) got things back up.

Clean URLs

I’m trying to figure out why URLs without file extensions quit working when upgrading a Domino Server to 6.5. It also does not work on the IIS server used by sjnlilburn.org.

On a Domino 5.5 server or Apache server, I’m used to being able to have something like this work:
